Sonoma Overlook Trail

Notice: Trail Closed for Rehabilitation and Reroute, Opening Delayed

The lower portion of the Sonoma Overlook Trail to be closed through winter, and a decision regarding the upper portion of the trail is pending.

The closure for the new reroute of the lower portion of the trail, from the kiosk to the Montini trail junction, needs to be extended until soil-moisture increases and the new trail bed achieves final compaction. This “curing” period will prevent the new trail sections from premature damage and ensure that the community receives the full benefit of the investment in the Project. Some trail sections, including the upper portion of the trail from the Mountain Cemetery Toyon Trail to the top meadow loop, may be ready to open this fall. The extent of these areas will not be known until construction is complete. In the meantime, please stay off the trail to let us continue our work without additional damage. For more information, please see the attached memo from the City of Sonoma.

Sonoma Overlook Trail is a nearly 3 mile walking path set onto the hillside backdrop above the City of Sonoma.

Since its inception, the Sonoma Overlook Stewards, an all volunteer organization, without cost to the City, make possible 1) educational programs for adults and school groups through its docent program and interpretive brochures and signage, 2) all trail maintenance and improvements, and 3) fundraising to support all SOT issues.

A diverse array of native plants and animals grace the gentle grade trail, and spectacular views of the town of Sonoma, the Sonoma Valley and the Bay Area can be found in the meadow at its top. Docent-led hikes are available for students and adults many weekends. The trail is open to the public for walking during daylight hours.

Sonoma Overlook Trail’s main trailhead is at the entrance to the Mountain Cemetery, off First Street West just four blocks north of the Plaza. The upper trailhead takes off from Toyon Road within the Mountain Cemetery. Dogs, bikes and horses are not permitted on the trail.
